Keeping the new lawn alive — our other services
Sod installation is mostly what happens before the grass arrives. Anyone can lay pallets; the lawn that’s still there in three years is the one where the ground was stripped, graded, topsoiled and rolled first.
What the work actually involves.
We remove the existing grass, grade and till, spread screened topsoil, level it, put down starter fertilizer, lay the sod and roll it in. The pallets are the visible part and the smallest part of the day.
Zoysia or Bermuda — the shade question.
Bermuda wants full sun and sulks without it. Zoysia takes part shade and is the safer choice for most Atlanta lots, where oaks and pines throw more shadow than people expect. We won’t sell Bermuda into a shaded yard; it looks fine in June and thin by the next spring.
Seed, when sod isn’t right.
For heavy shade or a tighter budget, a Fescue or Fescue-clover seed package — topsoil, drum-rolled smooth, seed, lime, starter fertilizer and wheat straw — is slower and cheaper. We’ll say which one your yard actually wants rather than which one we’d rather sell.
The first four weeks decide it.
New sod wants water every day at first, then less, then normal — and it wants to be left alone in between. No mowing until it knits to the soil, no heavy traffic, and no fertilizer beyond the starter that went down. We leave you the schedule written out, because this is where most new lawns are lost.
Fix the ground first.
If the yard holds water, new sod drowns exactly where the old grass died. Drainage or regrading goes in before the pallets, not after. And since sod’s first month is entirely about water, irrigation is worth looking at in the same conversation.
Then keep it.
New sod needs cutting on a schedule from the day it knits, which is why most customers roll straight onto weekly lawn care.
